When does my child need sealants and what do they do?

We generally recommend placing dental sealants on 6-year permanent molars.  A sealant is a thin plastic coating that is easily placed on the biting surface of the tooth to reduce the risk of decay.  The 6-year molar is the adult tooth most likely to decay, so sealants reduce that risk greatly.
