What is a space maintainer, and what does it do?

When children lose some baby teeth, primarily molars, the remaining teeth can drift forward.  This movement of teeth can result in the adult teeth erupting in the wrong position, and possibly even blocking out some teeth from even erupting.  To try to prevent these issues from occurring, we place a metal space maintainer to hold the position of baby teeth, so this movement is minimized.
