Most pediatricians recommend not using a pacifier or sucking a thumb past the age of 1. Extended sucking of pacifiers or thumbs can result in what we call an open-bite, where the front top teeth do not properly overlap the bottom teeth. If the habit is stopped early enough the open bite can sometimes correct itself without any intervention. But if it goes on too long, orthodontic correction may be necessary to correct.
