What is a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist is a licensed dentist who has gone onto 2 years of training (in a hospital residency) after graduating from dental school.  This training involves managing very young children, identifying and treating dental disease in an age specific manner, early orthodontic interventions, patient-specific prevention, hospital-based care in an operating room, among many other facets of pediatric care.  A pediatric dentist is different from a general dentist, as a pediatrician is different from a family physician.
